The Nyungne Retreat is designed to purify negative karma and accumulate merit and wisdom. It is a two-day practice focusing on the generation of the Bodhisattva attitude, the strict keeping of vows, and the recitation of the 1000-arm Chenrezig sadhana. Chenrezig is the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and his practice aids our development of loving-kindness and compassion. It is said that to accomplish the Nyungne, even once, can sever the currents leading to rebirth in the lower realms of existence.
Beginners and seasoned practitioners are encouraged to attend this profound practice. The reading transmission and orientation will be given Friday evening. For those who are short on time, a one-day practice on Saturday is strongly encouraged.
This year’s retreat will be held at the beautiful Sts Peter and Paul Retreat Center in Newark, OH. The Retreat Center offers overnight accommodations in private sleeping rooms. Each sleeping room includes two twin beds and roommates of the same gender will be assigned. Many rooms include private bathroom facilities. All bedding and towels are provided. Additionally, meals for the nyunge will be prepared by the chef at Sts Peter and Paul. Please review the rules and regulations for Sts Peter and Paul Retreat Center.
Practitioners are encouraged to bring a mala. Cushions, puja tables, practice texts and materials will be provided.
During the weekend retreat, there will be chanting sadhana practice multiple times each day including some prostrations. Lunch will be served on Saturday and then only water or fruit juice is permitted for the remainder of the day. Fasting with no food or drink on Sunday. The fast is broken with breakfast early Monday morning.
