DESCRIPTION:Thanks to the work of a dedicated core of volunteers\, the KTC Children’s Class started with smiles and applause in October 2023.\n \n\n\nMeeting in the Children’s Room on the lower level of the KTC from 11:30 to 12:30 on the First and Third Sundays of the month\, youths ages 5-10 practice meditation together\, hear stories told by the Buddha about virtuous actions (called Jataka Tales)\, do yoga poses\, make crafts\, play games and light candles on the special Youth Shrine and pray for those in need.\n \n\n\nActivities are aimed at younger children\, but those up to age 12 are welcome to attend.\n\n\nPlease register your child ahead of time through our Eventbrite link here: https://www.eventbrite.com/…/ktc-childrens-program…\n \n\n\nQuestions or interested in volunteering? DESCRIPTION:ONLINE ONLY on ZOOM! \nOn two August evenings\, Lama Tom and Mike Allen will lead an exploration into the nature of Buddhist Faith.  \nJudeo-Christian teachings define faith as  “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see\,” (Hebrews.11). In these faiths\, this “what is not seen” is divine revelation.  \nBuddhism has no such divine revelation. Instead\, there is an emphasis on one’s own experience guided by the Buddha’s teaching. Finding the ultimate truth requires verification of personal experience. \nOn the first night of this two-part discussion/exploration\, Lama Tom and Mike will invite attendees to share their own thoughts (about and struggles with) faith. Then Mike will explore Buddhist faith through a review of Sharon Salzberg’s book\, “Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience.”  (Attendees need not have read the book to participate.) \nOn the second night\, Lama Tom will explore faith according to the 12th Century Buddhist master Gampopa\, who described three separate categories of Buddhist faith. He completed a 3 year retreat in 2012.. He is a Resident Teacher at Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling. Coal miner 4 years. Social worker and social administrator for 35 years\, he is the father of two daughters and has three grandchildren. \nMike Allen says he came to Buddhism very slowly over a long period of time. Originally from Arkansas and having lived in Chicago and Detroit\, he came to Columbus in the 1990s. His first Buddhist study was Nichiren Buddhism\, a Japanese Mahayana tradition. After a while\, he began seeking a tradition that better resonated with him philosophically\, and says he found that in Tibetan Buddhism. He began studying at Columbus KTC and took refuge in December 2023. Mike says his spiritual journey has generated many questions that he enjoys exploring with this KTC sangha family. \n  \nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:This queer-focused\, queer-led group is for LGBTQI+ practitioners and those seeking fellowship with queer sangha. We will gather for practice\, conversation\, and community rooted in dharma\, belonging\, and queer lived experience. \nThis is a space for the questions\, humor\, complexity\, history\, resilience\, and joy that queer people may bring to the path. A space for honest conversation and shared practice\, where queer experience does not have to be translated\, minimized\, or left outside the shrine room door. \nWe hope this group will help KTC’s queer sangha become more visible\, connected\, and accessible\, including for people who are newer\, returning\, questioning\, far away\, or looking for a way to connect with our community. \nThe Queer Sangha group will meet at 6:00 PM on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the KTC Community Room. Come in person if possible\, or\, if you would like to attend by Zoom\, please email queersangha@columbusktc.org in advance and we will send you the Zoom information. SUMMARY:Lojong Lojong Practice and Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Sitting Meditation opens our minds in a way most of us have never experienced before. When we meditate\, we become keenly aware of our thoughts\, feelings\, and emotions\, and see how they influence our moment-to-moment experience of our lives. \nBut sometimes we feel overwhelmed by our thoughts and feelings\, leaving us with the impression that our thoughts and feelings are “out of control” and beyond our ability to engage and work with them. \nWouldn’t it be wonderful if we could find a technique to help us work with our thoughts and see them in perspective? \nMore than 2500 years ago\, the Buddha Shakyamuni said that love and compassion were “the way” – the way to work with emotions\, feelings and even thoughts themselves. \nThis new monthly Sunday session will focus on Lojong – a Tibetan word meaning “Mind Training\,” – that teaches us how to meditate on love and compassion and begin changing our minds from within – from the heart. \nWe will meet monthly on Second Sundays after the regular Sunday Dharma Talk to learn about compassion meditation and practice it together. \nSpecial Lojong prayers and meditation periods will be interspersed with advice about how to use the principles of love and compassion in everyday life. \nYou can join the class at any time; we hope to develop a small community of practitioners dedicated to living out the principles of Lojong in their daily lives and supporting each other in their practice.

DESCRIPTION:This queer-focused\, queer-led group is for LGBTQI+ practitioners and those seeking fellowship with queer sangha. We will gather for practice\, conversation\, and community rooted in dharma\, belonging\, and queer lived experience. \nThis is a space for the questions\, humor\, complexity\, history\, resilience\, and joy that queer people may bring to the path. A space for honest conversation and shared practice\, where queer experience does not have to be translated\, minimized\, or left outside the shrine room door. \nWe hope this group will help KTC’s queer sangha become more visible\, connected\, and accessible\, including for people who are newer\, returning\, questioning\, far away\, or looking for a way to connect with our community. \nThe Queer Sangha group will meet at 6:00 PM on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the KTC Community Room. Come in person if possible\, or\, if you would like to attend by Zoom\, please email queersangha@columbusktc.org in advance and we will send you the Zoom information.
