SUMMARY:Lojong Lojong Practice and Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Sitting Meditation opens our minds in a way most of us have never experienced before. When we meditate\, we become keenly aware of our thoughts\, feelings\, and emotions\, and see how they influence our moment-to-moment experience of our lives. \nBut sometimes we feel overwhelmed by our thoughts and feelings\, leaving us with the impression that our thoughts and feelings are “out of control” and beyond our ability to engage and work with them. \nWouldn’t it be wonderful if we could find a technique to help us work with our thoughts and see them in perspective? \nMore than 2500 years ago\, the Buddha Shakyamuni said that love and compassion were “the way” – the way to work with emotions\, feelings and even thoughts themselves. \nThis new monthly Sunday session will focus on Lojong – a Tibetan word meaning “Mind Training\,” – that teaches us how to meditate on love and compassion and begin changing our minds from within – from the heart. \nWe will meet monthly on Second Sundays after the regular Sunday Dharma Talk to learn about compassion meditation and practice it together. \nSpecial Lojong prayers and meditation periods will be interspersed with advice about how to use the principles of love and compassion in everyday life. \nYou can join the class at any time; we hope to develop a small community of practitioners dedicated to living out the principles of Lojong in their daily lives and supporting each other in their practice.

SUMMARY:Mala-Making Workshop: Create Buddhist Prayer Beads!
DESCRIPTION:Using natural materials and the blessing of mantra\, we will make a traditional Tibetan rosary (mala) to take home for our mantra practice\, or to donate to KTC’s bookstore. \nYou’ll learn a bit about malas from beader Kate Hawthorne\, who will teach basic bead-threading and knotting techniques to keep your mala together and useful! \nThis three-hour experience will bring you closer to the practice of mantra and your spiritual center\, while making a mala you can take with you and use at home. \nHave a mala that needs restringing ? Bag it up and bring it with you to learn the process for restringing it yourself.  \nAlready have a mala? Then you can come to help Columbus KTC by making a Mala for us to offer in our bookstore. \nThe donation requested for the class will help us with material purchases. Mala stringing kits available for a $5 donation. Donations over the cost of materials will benefit KTC’s Operations Fund. \nAttendance is limited to 20\, so we have enough mala-making kits for everyone. Thanks in advance for your understanding! \nIF YOU DO NOT HAVE FINANCIAL MEANS to attend\, please contact the organizer at kmwesley@me.com and you will be registered at no cost. \n  \nCan’t attend but want to help KTC’s Operations Fund? Hop over to our KTC donations page at this  link:  https://www.columbusktc.org/donate/ \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Refuge Vow Teaching and Ceremony with Lama Tom Broadwater
DESCRIPTION:Half-Hour Pre-Vow Teaching\, followed by one-hour ceremony – In-Person only \nIn response to dharma students’ requests\, Lama Tom will offer the Refuge Vow in a special program from 2 PM to 3:30 PM Saturday Aug. 1 at Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling. \nThe Refuge Vow Ceremony marks the beginning of a dharma student’s training. It is the formal entering of the Buddhist path. \nIn the Ceremony\, those Taking Refuge take the Buddha as their teacher\, the Dharma as their path and the Sangha (dharma community) as their guides and companions. \nThe Refuge Vow is the foundation of all other Buddhist ceremonies and training. Those who Take Refuge receive a Refuge Name and basic teachings on how to begin their Buddhist path. \nThose Taking Refuge may welcome family and friends to observe their ceremony. A short teaching on the meaning of the Refuge Vow will be given before the ceremony. Those who have already Taken Refuge are welcome to participate again to renew their Refuge Vows.  \n  \nSCHEDULE \n2 PM TO 2:30 PM – Preliminary Teaching \n2:30 PM to 3:30 PM – Vow Ceremony \nPre-Requisites: Before a person takes the Refuge Vow\, it is helpful to read about the vow and the ceremony.  \nAt this link\, you will find an article about Taking Refuge and the ceremony at KTC: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/3c3gwqq2xai52tyn117hm/Handout6TeachingOnRefuge.pdf?rlkey=7elycfggzi4epzqr3ky066t1b&st=9umerxfv&dl=0 \nWant to Take Refuge? SUMMARY:Volunteer Fair
DESCRIPTION:If you’re new to Columbus KTC\, this article is especially for you!  \nOn Sunday\, July 26\, immediately following the Dharma Talk\, KTC will host a luncheon and recruit new volunteers. \nVolunteers are literally the life-blood of our organization. Every time you walk through the door\, take a seat in the shrine room\, or enjoy a treat downstairs\, a group of volunteers made that possible. \nWhat’s more\, Columbus KTC volunteers earn huge wages!  Though not paid in greenbacks\, our volunteers have learned an important and ancient secret: giving your time grows your soul.  \nIn my own experience\, I didn’t feel fully like a part of KTC until I started to volunteer.  Let’s face it\, shamatha meditation is not much of a social activity!  Group chanting may do more to promote fellowship.  But volunteering\, as a practice\, goes further to create rich opportunities for social connection.  \nI think Lama Kathy would agree that ‘volunteering’ qualifies as practice. Just like our Kagyu tradition offers many kinds of practice to suit different personalities and mental orientations\, KTC volunteer opportunities are varied and numerous.  Whether it’s greeting\, hospitality\, shrine care\, building and grounds\, library\, or Zoom hosting (I could go on!) there are many ways to serve. \nSo\, please consider attending on July 26th. At the very least\, we’ll serve you a nice lunch. And potentially\, you’ll find a path to deepen your connection to KTC as your spiritual home. \nThank you\,\nChuck Drake\nDirector\, Columbus KTC

SUMMARY:Queer Sangha Group
DESCRIPTION:This queer-focused\, queer-led group is for LGBTQI+ practitioners and those seeking fellowship with queer sangha. We will gather for practice\, conversation\, and community rooted in dharma\, belonging\, and queer lived experience. \nThis is a space for the questions\, humor\, complexity\, history\, resilience\, and joy that queer people may bring to the path. A space for honest conversation and shared practice\, where queer experience does not have to be translated\, minimized\, or left outside the shrine room door. \nWe hope this group will help KTC’s queer sangha become more visible\, connected\, and accessible\, including for people who are newer\, returning\, questioning\, far away\, or looking for a way to connect with our community. \nThe Queer Sangha group will meet at 6:00 PM on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the KTC Community Room. Come in person if possible\, or\, if you would like to attend by Zoom\, please email queersangha@columbusktc.org in advance and we will send you the Zoom information. Please also email if you have any questions or want to learn more about the group.

SUMMARY:Chökhor Duchen Sacred Day Prayer Service
DESCRIPTION:By Tango7174 – Own work\, CC BY-SA 4.0\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10516495 \nChökhor Du Chen is one of Four Great Occasions (“Du Chen” in Tibetan) commemorating pivotal events in the life of the Buddha. Chökhor (“wheel-turning” in Tibetan) commemorates the First Teaching given by the Buddha in Varanasi\, 49 days after his experience of enlightenment. \nSince these days are related to important events in the life of the Buddha\, it is said that the effects of virtuous (and non-virtuous!) actions done on this day are multiplied millions of times. Therefore\, dharma practice is emphasized on these days. \nTo take advantage of the blessings of this day\, KTC will offer a session of Aspirational Prayers for Chökhor Du Chen beginning at 9:30 AM at KTC and on Zoom. \nThe one-hour prayer program starting at 9:30 am\, will include a prayer of offering and praise to the Buddha\, as well as one of the five main “monlams” (aspiration prayers) recited in the Kagyu tradition.. \nSaying these prayers and reciting the Buddha’s words helps us accumulate a mind of virtue\, which in turn helps us see the power of love and wisdom in our lives and sets our spiritual course – both now\, and in the future. \nWEATHER PERMITTING\, we will follow the prayer service with a Stupa Offering Ceremony at 10:30 AM. The KTC Shrine Room will be open for personal prayers and practice until 11:30 AM. \nPrayers we will be reciting can be downloaded at these links: \nThe Tashi Prayer (usually recited before the Chenrezig practice at KTC) can be downloaded at this link: \nhttps://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/8-Auspicious-Tashi-prayer-1.pdf \nRefuge and Dedications \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/1l8qrfwy71xexhf/refuge%20and%20dedications%20.pdf?dl=0 \nThe Lama Rinpochema Prayer (usually recited in place of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoché’s longevity supplication) https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Lama-Rinpochema.Both-translations.pdf \nPraise of the Twelve Deeds of the Buddha: https://columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Praise-of-the-12-Deeds-of-Buddha.pdf \nDedication from “The Way of the Bodhisattva” \nhttps://columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Dedication-from-Bodhicaryavatara.pdf

SUMMARY:White Tara Sadhana Reading Transmission Event & Watch Party
DESCRIPTION:Mantra meditation is one of the easiest and most accessible practices of Tibetan Buddhism. \nVisualizing oneself as a Buddha or bodhisattva while reciting a mantra and making aspirations for the benefit of beings is a powerful way to connect to our own inner goodness and send love\, compassion and wisdom to other beings. \nIn this Zoom event\, His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa will bestow the reading transmission (lung) and instructions for his newly composed White Tara Longevity sadhana — a rare and precious opportunity to receive the blessing of this practice directly from the author himself. \nThe sadhana is entitled “The Feast of Deathless Nectar: A Method for Offering Longevity Prayers to the Holy Masters Through the Practice of White Tārā\, the Wish-Fulfilling Wheel.”  \nThis is an extraordinary occasion to receive a living transmission of a fresh composition by one of the foremost Buddhist masters of our time. All are welcome. \nPractitioners of all experience levels are welcome to attend. There are no special prerequisites for this watch party.  \nYou can download a Tibetan-language version of the text here. We hope an English version will be available next week. \nCan’t attend the watch party\, but want to receive the transmission?  \nTo attend individually from home\, you can register with event sponsor KTD Monastery here: https://kagyu.org/eventBD/attendEdmr?06WhTaraT26 \nWant to read about His Holiness Karmapa? Visit his official website: www.kagyuoffice.org \nNOTE: We do not know how long the transmission and instruction will take; we have set the 9 AM to 12 noon time frame as a suggestion. You might wish to bring a vegetarian sack lunch in case you need it!

SUMMARY:Gampopa’s Jewel Ornament of Liberation: A Teaching and Reading Transmission Event
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM AVAILABLE IN-PERSON AND ON ZOOM\nSince the 12th Century\, students of Karma Kagyu teachings have relied on Gampopa’s “Jewel Ornament of Liberation” to describe and guide their Buddhist path.  \nThis short but powerful book (also known as “Ornament of Precious Liberation”) describes in simple terms how ordinary sentient beings can become Buddhas through practices of ethics\, compassion\, and wisdom. \nKarma Thegsum Chöling Columbus is honored to offer students a profound connection to this text by offering a Reading Transmission of the text itself as well as teachings about the life and writings of the meditation master Gampopa\, by Lama Karma Drodhul. \nA reading transmission\, in which a lama reads a spiritual text in its original form in a quick and fluid fashion\, is said to connect one spiritual generation to another through the blessings of the lamas’ words. \nStarting Friday evening\, Lama Karma will give four short sessions of teaching about Gampopa\, his life and his dharma\, as well as short sessions of Reading Transmission of the “Jewel Ornament” text. \nOn Saturday afternoon June 6\, Lama Karma will bestow the empowerment of White Tara\, the feminine aspect of compassion\, as a blessing for the long life and excellent health of dharma students.  \nIt is our hope that by receiving this transmission\, you will experience a profound connection to the teachings and a blessing to study Gampopa’s dharma and use its principles in your everyday life. \nAbout Lama Karma Drodhul \nLama Karma Drodhul is an accomplished lama and teacher who has taught in the United States for almost 20 years. He and his wife Cherry and their young son live in upstate New York.  \nLama Karma is the nephew of\, and was principal attendant for the late Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche\, the founding abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra monastery.  \nLama Karma has a gift for expressing ancient teachings in ways that apply to modern life. \nWhat Is A Reading Transmission? \nReading Transmissions have been part of Tibetan Buddhism since the dharma came to Tibet from India in the 7th Century. \nAs a lama reads the text in its original form in a quick and fluid fashion\, students meditate that the words melt into their hearts\, purifying negativity\, building positive qualities\, and uplifting their capacity to manifest wisdom and compassion.  \nThe sound itself can be an object of meditation\, inviting listeners to dwell in the practice of Shamatha and Vipassana. \nReading Transmissions also are thought to bring blessing to the places they are given\, steeping them in wisdom written on the pages. \nThe transmission will be given in four two-hour sessions beginning Friday evening June 5\, continuing Saturday and Sunday June 6 and 7\, including one one-hour session given during the Sunday Morning 11:30 AM Dharma Talk on Sunday June 7. \nIntermixed with the reading\, Lama Karma will give short talks and instructions to help participants connect to the blessings of Gampopa\, his life\, and his teachings. \n***** \nALL SESSIONS ARE IN-PERSON at the Columbus KTC Center\, 645 W. RIch Street\, Columbus\, OH. Ideally participants will attend all sessions\, but Lama Karma said there is blessing in attending even just one session. \nZOOM ATTENDANCE will be by registration only. Lama Karma has asked that participants must have received the vow of Buddhist Refuge\, and must attend all online sessions.  \nNo audio or video recording is permitted. \nATTENDANCE IS BY DONATION. If you lack funds to attend\, please send a message to kmwesley@me.com and request a free ticket. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nNEED THE REFUGE VOW TO ATTEND? Contact kmwesley@me.com to be on the list for the Refuge Ceremony at 6 PM Friday June 5\, 2026 \nWe hope you can join us for this special blessing. \n******** \nABOUT LAMA KARMA:\nLama Karma is a Tibetan Buddhist teacher and past president of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery in Woodstock\, NY. He also is the nephew of KTD’s first Abbot\, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche\, and assisted Khenpo Rinpoche at KTD. As a youth\, Lama Karma excelled in all aspects of dharma study at Thrangu Monastery and Thrangu Rinpoche sent him to the United States. to deepen his understanding of the dharma under the tutelage of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. \nIn March 2004\, Lama Karma completed his first\, and in February 2008 his second\, traditional three-year\, three-month retreat under Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche at Karme Ling Retreat Center. He has traveled to centers throughout North and South America to teach for the past 10 years. He is the author of Amrita of Eloquence: A Biography of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche and Siddhas of Ga: Remembered by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. SUMMARY:KTC Building Dedication Celebration 2026
DESCRIPTION:    \nIt’s been 10 years since an arson fire destroyed the old Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling Meditation Center in Franklinton\, and now\, at last\, external construction on the center is complete and we are ready to formally dedicate our building! \nWith the help of Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin\, abbot of our “home” monastery Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in Woodstock NY\, and in the presence of our honored guest Lama Tashi Dondup and other khenpos and lamas\, we will consecrate and inaugurate our building in ceremonies from 9 AM to 4 PM Saturday\, May 9\, 2026. \nWe can’t wait for you to join us for this joyous occasion to practice offerings and gratitude for our new spiritual “home!” \nThe Dedication Celebration will have three parts: \n\nMorning consecration prayers (called puja) from 9-10:30 AM (doors open 8 AM\, recommended arrival by 8:15 AM)\nAn Opening Ceremony for the new temple at 11 AM \nAfternoon Offering and Mantra prayers from 2-4 PM \n\nDue to limited space in the shrine room\, in-person attendance for the Morning and Afternoon prayer services will be by REGISTRATION ONLY through EventBrite. \nTo ensure that the maximum number of Sangha members\, volunteers\, and friends can attend\, we are setting up an Eventbrite registration system for a total of 100 tickets – 50 for the morning prayer session and 50 for the afternoon prayer session. \nYou can request a ticket for EITHER the morning OR the afternoon session\, not both. \nThose holding AM tickets will be welcome to sit in the Community Room in the afternoon to watch the pujas on TV monitors.  \nThose holding PM tickets will be welcome to sit in the Community Room in the morning to watch the pujas on TV monitors. \nTo register for either the morning or afternoon prayer session\, please click here. \nOnce all 100 tickets have been claimed\, a waitlist will form on EventBrite.  \nThose on the waitlist will be contacted if additional seats become available..  \nHowever\, the 11 AM Opening Ceremony will be webcast live on Columbus KTC’s YouTube and Facebook pages. Join us from anywhere! \nAnd there will be a Zoom attendance option for our “long-distance” dharma friends to watch the Saturday programs online. ZOOM Link included in Registration Confirmation email. \nAbout the Day \nBoth prayer services will include Tibetan chants and offerings. In the morning we recite consecration prayers; in the afternoon we will ask the blessing of the lamas\, yidams\, and protectors.  \nWe won’t have prayer books for all the chants (some will be in Tibetan only)\, and all seating will be in chairs without tables\, but your personal prayers and mantras will help us bless our space\, so registrants can bring your malas pray along! \n  \nSchedule for the day includes: \n9 AM – 10:30 Opening prayers and “Lunar Ambrosia” consecration puja \n\nTashi Prayer\nTengye Monlam\nChokju Duzhi\nDzamling Dewei Monlam\n\n10:30 AM – Break \n11 AM to 12 noon – Official Opening Ceremony  \n\nKeynote Speaker: Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin\nAdditional Speaker: Lama Kathy Wesley\n\n12 noon: Lunch Break – All morning and afternoon registrants will receive a vegetarian box lunch.
