SUMMARY:Saturday Sadhana Class: White Tara
DESCRIPTION:Mantra meditation is one of the easiest and most accessible practices of Tibetan Buddhism. \nVisualizing oneself as a Buddha or bodhisattva while reciting a mantra and making aspirations for the benefit of beings is a powerful way to connect to our own inner goodness and send love\, compassion and wisdom to other beings. \n  \nIN-PERSON AND ON ZOOM \nThis 2 1/2 hour workshop will introduce the WhiteTara Practice as it’s recited at Columbus KTC on Sunday mornings. Tara is the awakened bodhisattva of compassion in action\, and is associated with the removal of obstacles and protection from illness and untimely death. \nInstructor Lama Kathy Wesley will explain the history and background of the prayer text\, show us how to read Tibetan transliteration\, and teach us elementary visualization techniques. The class will cover the main part of the White Tara prayer text by the 8th Tai Situ Rinpoche Tenpai Nyingje. \nParticipants will finish the workshop knowing how to read a Tibetan prayer text\, and be prepared to participate in the White Tara practice at KTC. \nPractitioners of all experience levels are welcome to attend. There are no special prerequisites for this class. Students will receive links to download a PDF of a White Tara chant practice and a PDF of a teaching outline for the class.  \n  \nABOUT TICKETS: Attendance is by donation. You can donate any amount you wish – even as little as $1. It is all appreciated!  \nIF YOU DO NOT HAVE financial means\, or have difficulty registering online\, please write lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will register you at no cost.  \nStudents must have an internet connection\, email capability\, and download the Zoom application in order to attend. SUMMARY:Shamatha Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness Meditation is our foundation as practicing Buddhists. By practicing basic quiet sitting meditation (called Shamatha in Sanskrit)\, we develop more awareness of our thoughts and motivations. As a result\, an innate gentleness toward ourselves and others emerges. \nExtended periods of shamatha meditation help us deepen our practice by giving us a chance to work with thoughts\, distractions\, and resistance that may not come up in shorter meditation sessions. \nLama Kathy Wesley will provide brief talks at intervals during the retreat. She will also be available for interviews with participants who would like to discuss their practice. \nKTC Meditation Instructor and Director Chuck Drake will act as umdze. \nThe program will be offered in-person only at KTC. Those attending should bring a vegetarian sack lunch. Water\, coffee\, and tea will be provided. \nTo promote a mindful atmosphere\, Functional Talking (i.e.\, only for essential quick communication) will be strongly encouraged. \nIf you’d like to attend only part of this retreat\, you are welcome to do so.  When you arrive\, quietly join the retreatants in the shrine room. \nABOUT LAMA KATHY  \nKathy Wesley (Lama Gyurme Chötsö) has been a student of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche since 1977. She participated in the first three-year retreat led by Khenpo Rinpoche at Karmé Ling Retreat Center in upstate New York\, and thus earned the title of ‘retreat lama.’ Lama Kathy serves at the Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling as its Resident Teacher and travels to other Buddhist centers throughout the country to share the dharma. She lives in Newark\, Ohio with her husband\, Mike. \nABOUT CHUCK DRAKE \nChuck Drake is a meditation instructor for Columbus KTC though he now spends most of his time serving as KTC’s administrative Director. Chuck took refuge with Khenpo Karthar in 1981 and\, in 1988\, he attended a summer-long buddhist seminary at Rocky Mountain Dharma Center in Colorado. Chuck started attending Columbus KTC regularly in 2012.  He has also served as Treasurer and Assistant Director. Chuck is married to Mylynda Drake. Except for his KTC duties\, he is now retired. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Sharing the Blessings of Milarepa’s Life: A Reading Transmission Event
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM AVAILABLE IN-PERSON AND ON ZOOM\nWhen we hear about Buddhist masters of the past\, their amazing stories of dedication\, devotion\, and accomplishment can be stirring and inspiring. Still\, we might wonder: how can we who study dharma today possibly connect to their lives and examples? \nThe Tibetan tradition provides a bridge for these blessings to come to us from ages past – the tradition of Reading Transmission. \nAs a lama reads the text in its original form in a quick and fluid fashion\, students meditate that the words melt into their hearts\, purifying negativity\, building positive qualities\, and uplifting their capacity to manifest wisdom and compassion.  \nThe sound itself can be an object of meditation\, inviting listeners to dwell in the practice of Shamatha and Vipassana. \nReading Transmissions also are thought to bring blessing to the places they are given\, steeping them in wisdom written on the pages. \nColumbus Karma Thegsum Chöling is honored to be hosting its very first long-form Reading Transmission Aug. 29-31 with Lama Karma Drodhul\, nephew of KTC founder Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche\, reading “The Life of Milarepa\,” an inspiring story of devotion\, compassion\, wisdom and redemption by the Tsangnyön Heruka. \nMilarepa is universally revered in Tibet as a great yogi who overcame immense evil and obstacles and gained Buddhahood in a single lifetime. \nMany of his songs are teachings in themselves\, some of them pointing out the futility of worldly life\, some pointing out the nature of mind itself.  \nThe transmission will be given in five sessions: four two-hour sessions beginning Friday evening Aug. 29\, and continuing Saturday and Sunday Aug. 30 and 31\, and one one-hour session given after the Sunday Morning Dharma Talk on Sunday Aug. 31. \nIntermixed with the reading\, Lama Karma will give short talks and instructions to help participants connect to the blessings of Milarepa and his story. \n***** \nALL SESSIONS ARE IN-PERSON at the Columbus KTC Center\, 645 W. RIch Street\, Columbus\, OH. Ideally participants will attend all sessions\, but Lama Karma said there is blessing in attending even just one session. \nZOOM ATTENDANCE will be by application only. Lama Karma has asked that participants must have received the vow of Buddhist Refuge\, and must attend all online sessions.  \nNo audio or video recording is permitted. \nATTENDANCE IS BY DONATION. If you lack funds to attend\, please send a message to kmwesley@me.com and request a free ticket. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nNEED THE REFUGE VOW TO ATTEND? Contact kmwesley@me.com to be on the list for the Refuge Ceremony at 6 PM Friday Aug. 29. \nWe hope you can join us for this special blessing. \n******** \nABOUT LAMA KARMA:\nLama Karma is a Tibetan Buddhist teacher and past president of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery in Woodstock\, NY. He also is the nephew of KTD’s first Abbot\, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche\, and assisted Khenpo Rinpoche at KTD. As a youth\, Lama Karma excelled in all aspects of dharma study at Thrangu Monastery and Thrangu Rinpoche sent him to the United States. to deepen his understanding of the dharma under the tutelage of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. \nIn March 2004\, Lama Karma completed his first\, and in February 2008 his second\, traditional three-year\, three-month retreat under Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche at Karme Ling Retreat Center. He has traveled to centers throughout North and South America to teach for the past 10 years. He is the author of Amrita of Eloquence: A Biography of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche and Siddhas of Ga: Remembered by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. He was appointed as the president of KTD by H.H Karmapa in September of 2018 and completed his term in September 2021. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Dharma Crafts Workshop: Creating Buddha Images
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED DATE! \nIN-PERSON Only \nThe creation of Buddha images (kupar\, in Tibetan) has been a religious activity for Buddhist practitioners for centuries.  \nIt is said that the creation of Buddha images (particularly those created using a tikse\, a compositional framework based on harmonious mathematical proportions) cultivates immense virtue\, as these images can plant the seed of awakening in all who encounter them. \nIn this workshop\, Lama Karma Wangdu will show us how to cast Buddha images in plaster to take home for our own spiritual practice\, or to donate to KTC’s bookstore. \nLama Kathy will explain the history and traditions behind image creation  \nThis three-hour experience will bring you closer to the practice of the buddhadharma and your spiritual center\, while making an image you can take with you and use at home. \nThe $5 base donation requested for the class will help us with material purchases. Donations over the cost of materials will benefit KTC’s Operations Fund. \nAttendance is limited to 15\, so we have enough materials and workstations for everyone to make one image. Thanks in advance for your understanding! \nIF YOU DO NOT HAVE FINANCIAL MEANS to attend\, please contact the organizer at kmwesley@me.com and you will be registered at no cost. \nCan’t attend but want to help KTC’s Operations Fund? Hop over to our KTC donations page at this  link:  https://www.columbusktc.org/donate/ \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Chökhor Duchen Festival of Aspirations
DESCRIPTION:By Tango7174 – Own work\, CC BY-SA 4.0\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10516495 \nChökhor Du Chen is one of Four Great Occasions (“Du Chen” in Tibetan) commemorating pivotal events in the life of the Buddha. Chökhor (“wheel-turning” in Tibetan) commemorates the First Teaching given by the Buddha in Varanasi\, 49 days after his experience of enlightenment. \nSince these days are related to important events in the life of the Buddha\, it is said that the effects of virtuous (and non-virtuous!) actions done on this day are multiplied millions of times. Therefore\, dharma practice is emphasized on these days. \nTo take advantage of the blessings of this day\, KTC will offer a session of Aspirational Prayers for Chökhor Du Chen beginning at 9:30 AM at KTC and on Zoom. \nThe one-hour prayer program starting at 9:30 am\, will include a prayer of offering and praise to the Buddha\, as well as one of the five main “monlams” (aspiration prayers) recited in the Kagyu tradition.. \nSaying these prayers and reciting the Buddha’s words helps us accumulate a mind of virtue\, which in turn helps us see the power of love and wisdom in our lives and sets our spiritual course – both now\, and in the future. \nWEATHER PERMITTING\, we will follow the prayer service with a Stupa Offering Ceremony at 10:30 AM. The KTC Shrine Room will be open for personal prayers and practice until 11:30 AM. \nPrayers we will be reciting can be downloaded at these links: \n\nThe Tashi Prayer (usually recited before the Chenrezig practice at KTC): https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/8-Auspicious-Tashi-prayer-1.pdf\nRefuge and Dedications: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1l8qrfwy71xexhf/refuge%20and%20dedications%20.pdf?dl=0\nThe Lama Rinpochema Prayer (usually recited in place of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoché’s longevity supplication): https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Lama-Rinpochema.Both-translations.pdf\nPraise of the Twelve Deeds of the Buddha: https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Praise-of-the-12-Deeds-of-Buddha.pdf\nDedication from “The Way of the Bodhisattva”: https://www.dropbox.com/s/d4fcy48vtw8kz3t/Dedication%20from%20Bodhicaryavatara.pdf?dl=0

SUMMARY:Sunday Dharma Programs (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:After six years of waiting – after an arson fire moved us into borrowed spaces for four years\, and a pandemic kept us from meeting in person for two years more – Columbus KTC opened its new location on Sunday March 20\, 2022! \nAlthough we’re returning to in-person programs\, we will still be serving our Zoom and livestream audiences. So you might see signs in the Classroom and Shrine Room reminding you that by entering the room\, you agree to be seen on camera for the folks watching from home. \nYou can find the full schedule for the current week and instructions to join our online sessions in our virtual shrine room. \n  \n\nTo help support these virtual programs and other activities sponsored by Columbus KTC\, please consider making a donation. \n\n  \n  \n
