SUMMARY:Chötrul Duchen Sacred Day Prayer Service
DESCRIPTION:The two-week observance of “The Waxing Moon of Miracles\,” which begins with Losar (the day after the New Moon)\, concludes with Chötrul Duchen (the Great Occasion of the Buddha’s Miracles) on March 3- the Full Moon in the First Month of the Lunar Year. Virtuous acts done during this time are multiplied many thousand-fold because of its connection with events in the life of the historical Buddha.  \nAt KTC\, we will celebrate Chötrul Duchen with a morning session of prayer.  \nIt is said that the positive effects of dharma practice on the Great Occasions are multiplied many hundreds of times\, so this is an ideal time to be with your Dharma family for practice. \nAs aspirations made on this day are said to be more powerful because of the blessing of the holiday\, our prayer session will include recitations of English-language prayers connecting our aspirations with those of great masters of the past. \nOne of the prayers we will recite will be the Lamp Offering Prayers; if you are participating from home\, feel welcome to bring an electric candle or regular candle with you to the Zoom session. \nPrayers will include: \n\nTashi Prayer \nRefuge and Bodhicitta prayers\nLamp Offering Prayers\nPraise of the 12 Deeds of the Buddha\nAspiration of Maitreya\nDedications

SUMMARY:Compassion at the Time of Death: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Our mind is central to our experience of life and death\, so it makes sense to nurture our minds to experience more wakefulness and love. \nIn his book\, “The Great Path of Awakening” Jargon Kontrul teaches that facing death with courage\, compassion\, and wisdom transforms the dying experience.  \nBy embracing impermanence\, practicing kindness\, and nurturing awareness\, we approach death not as an end but as part of the ongoing journey of the mind.  \nJamgon Kongtrul’s teachings help us move beyond fear and sorrow\, inviting us to live and die with grace\, presence\, and compassion.  \nThoughts of death can encourage a grateful attitude toward the preciousness of life and ignite a desire for a nurturing practice of mindfulness. \nIn the morning of retreat\, we will discuss Jamgon Kongtrul’s teachings on the “5 powers” (five strategies for cultivating a successful spiritual practice) and show how they can also be important preparatory tools for facing the end of life. \nIn the afternoon\, we will use these same teachings to guide us on an imaginary journey through our own dying process.  \nWe will also hear inspiring and practical advice from Chaplain Cathy Lhamo Jackson\, who has prayed at the bedsides of the dying for more than a decade. Her experiences will help us see another side of illness and change. \nWe will end the retreat with a discussion and debriefing\, with an eye  toward applying these teachings in our daily lives.  \nPlease bring a vegetarian sack lunch. \n*** \nAbout Lama Tom \nLama Tom Broadwater became a student of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche in1999. He completed a 3 year retreat in 2012. He currently serves as an Associate Lama at Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling Buddhist Meditation Center in Columbus OH. Coal miner 4 years. Social worker and social administrator 35 years. Married 45 years. Father of two daughters and 3 grandchildren.  \nAbout Chaplain Cathy Jackson \nChaplain Cathy Lhamo has been a student of dharma and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche since the 1980s. SUMMARY:Losar Sunday Program
DESCRIPTION:KTC Welcomes the Year of the Horse \nAfter celebrating the Gregorian calendar New Year on Jan. 1\, Columbus KTC is observing the Tibetan New Year (Losar) on Wednesday Feb. 18.. \nAs the “old year” comes to a close\, it is a Tibetan cultural tradition to clean one’s shrine and home in preparation for the “new year.”  \nIn that same way\, it is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition to purify one’s thoughts and mindstream in the days before Losar (New Year) to bless and release the old year and prepare for the new year ahead. \nAt Columbus KTC\, we will gather as a community for three special pujas before Losar to bless and purify the old year and make offerings toward goodness and auspiciousness in the new year. \nThen\, on Losar morning\, we will offer lamps and recite prayers to bless ourselves and the community and start the new year with auspicious energy and blessings. \nThe first two weeks of Losar coincide each year with the Great Occasion of the Buddha’s Performance of Miracles (Chötrul Duchen\, in Tibetan)\, one of four Sacred Days on the Karma Kagyu tradition’s yearly calendar. This means that the benefit and blessing of any practice we do during this “Waxing Moon of Miracles” (sometimes called “The Month of Miracles”) is multiplied millions of times.  \nWe hope you can join us for these programs\, some of which will be webcast on Zoom. \nPre-registration is not needed for these events. Hope to see you there! \nAs our Tibetan friends say\, “Losar Tashi Delek!” (Auspicious New Year!)

SUMMARY:Commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the Columbus KTC Fire
DESCRIPTION:     \nIt’s been 10 years since an arson fire devastated the old wooden church building that was the home of the Columbus KTC from 1990 to 2016.  \nIn observance of the 10th Anniversary\, KTC will recite prayers of auspiciousness and of appreciation for the masters of our Karma Kagyu lineage\, recite the Green Tara Sadhana and the Diamond Sutra to remove obstacles for the center\, and make an outdoor incense offering (called Sang in Tibetan) to accumulate good circumstances for KTC’s future.  \nThe two-hour observance will include a short tea and coffee break between the Green Tara sadhana and the Diamond Sutra and Sang offering for hot drinks and snacks. \nBy joining in these practices\, we celebrate the resilience of our KTC sangha and re-commit ourselves to KTC’s future as a beacon of mindfulness in Central Ohio. \nWe will have sadhana booklets available for in-person participants who wish to chant. Links to download the prayers will be included for those who wish to participate via Zoom. \nAll are welcome\nThere is no charge to attend\, though donations to support Columbus KTC are always appreciated. \nPre-registration is requested. You can register on Eventbrite at this link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/commemoration-of-the-10th-anniversary-of-the-ktc-fire-tickets-1979682854710?aff=oddtdtcreator \n  \nProgram for the Observance: \n\nTashi Prayer\nMahamudra Lineage Prayer\nGreen Tara Sadhana\nCoffee/Tea Break\nDiamond Sutra in English\nSang Puja\nDedications and Aspirations

SUMMARY:Medicine Buddha Workshop (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Mantra meditation is one of the easiest and most accessible practices of Tibetan Buddhism. \nVisualizing oneself as a Buddha or bodhisattva while reciting a mantra and making aspirations for the benefit of beings is a powerful way to connect to our own inner goodness and send love\, compassion and wisdom to other beings. \nSince many mantra meditation texts (called “sadhana” texts) are recited in Tibetan\, they can be a little difficult to approach. But KTC wants to help everyone feel comfortable and welcome to attend our weekly sadhana practices\, so we are offering regular Sadhana workshops to acquaint people with the practices. \nThis session will cover the Medicine Buddha healing mantra practice. It will be led by Cathy Lhamo Jackson. \nPractitioners of all experience levels are welcome to attend. There are no special prerequisites for this class. Students will receive links to download a PDF of the Medicine Buddha chant practice and a PDF of a teaching outline for the class.  \nABOUT TICKETS: We offer tickets on a donation basis to benefit the Columbus KTC Operations Fund. You can donate any amount you wish – even as little as $1. It is all appreciated! \nIF YOU DO NOT HAVE financial means\, or have difficulty registering online\, please write lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will register you at no cost.  \nStudents must have an internet connection\, email capability\, and download the Zoom application in order to attend. Zoom software is available here: https://zoom.us \nCan’t attend but want to help KTC’s operations fund?  \nHop over to our KTC donations page at this link:   \nhttps://www.columbusktc.org/donate/ \n  \nLink to download the Medicine Buddha sadhana: \nhttps://columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Menla-KTD-Book.Medicine.Buddha.pdf \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:The Manjushri Prayer and Sadhana for Wisdom Part 2 with Lama Kathy
DESCRIPTION:IN-PERSON and ON ZOOM! \nWe all want and need wisdom in our lives. It is said that when the Buddha attained his spiritual awakening\, he realized what are called the Two Wisdoms – the Wisdom that Knows How Things Appear\, and the Wisdom that Knows How Things Really Are. \nBut how do we as beginning students of the Buddha approach these two wisdoms? How do we know what to study\, and how to study? \nUsing a teaching by KTC Founder Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche as a guide\, Lama Kathy Wesley will continue her instructions on a prayer and mantra practice of Manjushri Bodhisattva\, said to be the embodiment of the Buddha’s wisdom. \nThese prayers are said to produce good conditions (both inner and outer) for the study of dharma and the development of wisdom. \nThe first Manjushri workshop in November covered the text and chanting; this second session will cover visualizations and mantra recitation for the prayer and practice. \nMissed Part 1? No problem! You can check it out on KTC’s YouTube Channel: \nThe workshops are being held to introduce these prayers\, which are now recited at 10 AM Every Fourth Sunday at KTC. \nABOUT TICKETS: Both In-Person and Zoom participation is by donation. All donations benefit Columbus KTC’s Operations Fund. You can donate as little as $1\, or any amount you wish – it is all appreciated! \nIF YOU DO NOT HAVE financial means\, or have difficulty registering online\, please write lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will register you at no cost. \nWANT TO READ AHEAD? \nWe will send all participants a link to our new Manjushri Prayer Book. \nCAN’T ATTEND\, but want to help KTC’s Operations Fund? \nHop over to our KTC donations page at this link: https://columbusktc.kindful.com \nABOUT LAMA KATHY: A student of buddhism since meeting Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche in 1977\, Lama Kathy participated in the first 3-Year Retreat conducted by Khenpo Rinpoche in the United States. Since graduating from retreat in 1996\, Lama Kathy has served as the Resident Teacher of the Columbus KTC. \nRegister here
