SUMMARY:Chökhor Duchen Festival of Aspirations
DESCRIPTION:By Tango7174 – Own work\, CC BY-SA 4.0\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10516495 \nChökhor Du Chen is one of Four Great Occasions (“Du Chen” in Tibetan) commemorating pivotal events in the life of the Buddha. Chökhor (“wheel-turning” in Tibetan) commemorates the First Teaching given by the Buddha in Varanasi\, 49 days after his experience of enlightenment. \nSince these days are related to important events in the life of the Buddha\, it is said that the effects of virtuous (and non-virtuous!) actions done on this day are multiplied millions of times. Therefore\, dharma practice is emphasized on these days. \nTo take advantage of the blessings of this day\, KTC will offer a session of Aspirational Prayers for Chökhor Du Chen beginning at 9:30 AM at KTC and on Zoom. \nThe one-hour prayer program starting at 9:30 am\, will include a prayer of offering and praise to the Buddha\, as well as one of the five main “monlams” (aspiration prayers) recited in the Kagyu tradition.. \nSaying these prayers and reciting the Buddha’s words helps us accumulate a mind of virtue\, which in turn helps us see the power of love and wisdom in our lives and sets our spiritual course – both now\, and in the future. \nWEATHER PERMITTING\, we will follow the prayer service with a Stupa Offering Ceremony at 10:30 AM. The KTC Shrine Room will be open for personal prayers and practice until 11:30 AM. \nPrayers we will be reciting can be downloaded at these links: \n\nThe Tashi Prayer (usually recited before the Chenrezig practice at KTC): https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/8-Auspicious-Tashi-prayer-1.pdf\nRefuge and Dedications: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1l8qrfwy71xexhf/refuge%20and%20dedications%20.pdf?dl=0\nThe Lama Rinpochema Prayer (usually recited in place of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoché’s longevity supplication): https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Lama-Rinpochema.Both-translations.pdf\nPraise of the Twelve Deeds of the Buddha: https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Praise-of-the-12-Deeds-of-Buddha.pdf\nDedication from “The Way of the Bodhisattva”: https://www.dropbox.com/s/d4fcy48vtw8kz3t/Dedication%20from%20Bodhicaryavatara.pdf?dl=0

SUMMARY:Learning Sadhanas on Saturday: Green Tara
DESCRIPTION:Mantra meditation is one of the easiest and most accessible practices of Tibetan Buddhism. \nVisualizing oneself as a Buddha or bodhisattva while reciting a mantra and making aspirations for the benefit of beings is a powerful way to connect to our own inner goodness and send love\, compassion and wisdom to other beings. \nSince many mantra meditation texts (called “sadhana” texts) are recited in Tibetan\, they can be a little difficult to approach. But KTC wants to help everyone feel comfortable and welcome to attend our weekly sadhana practices\, so we are offering regular workshops on our regular sadhana practices.  \nThis particular session will cover the Green Tara (Bodhisattva of Active Compassion) mantra practice.  \nTopics covered will include the history of the sadhana\, the principles of mantra meditation\, and step-by-step instructions on how to learn and benefit from Tibetan Buddhist visualization meditation. \nPractitioners of all experience levels are welcome to attend. There are no special prerequisites for this class. Students will receive links to download a PDF of the Green Tara chant practice and a PDF of a teaching outline for the class.  \nAttendance is by donation. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE financial means\, or have difficulty registering online\, please write lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will register you at no cost. Those signing up for Zoom instruction must have an internet connection\, email capability\, and download the Zoom application in order to attend. Zoom software is available here: https://zoom.us \n  \nLink to download the Green Tara sadhana:\nhttps://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Green-Tara-8-by-11.final_.pdf \nOutline for the class:\nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/zovmup4u15siy4j/Outline.CJ.Green%20Tara%20Sadhana%202020.pdf?dl=0 \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Sadhana Saturday Workshop: The Practice of Amitabha
DESCRIPTION:Mantra practice (sometimes called “sadhana” practice in Sanskrit) is part of our weekly and monthly practice calendar here at Columbus KTC.  \nThese short but profound meditation practices can help us connect to our inner qualities of love\, compassion\, healing\, and wisdom. But since many are chanted in Tibetan\, they can be a little difficult to approach. \nTo help our sangha members feel comfortable and welcome to attend our regular sadhana practices\, we are offering these occasional workshops to help folks connect to mantra practice.  \nThis month\, Cathy Lhamo Jackson will offer a special two-hour workshop on the mantra practice of Amitabha Buddha\, known as the Buddha of Boundless Light.  \nTopics covered will be the history of Dewachen (Pure Realm) practice\, the short Amitabha sadhana by Namchu Mingyur Dorje\, the principles of mantra meditation\, and step-by-step instructions on how to learn and benefit from Tibetan Buddhist visualization meditation. \nPractitioners of all experience levels are welcome to attend. There are no special prerequisites for this class. Students will receive links to download a short Amitabha chant practice PDF and a PDF of a teaching outline for the class.  \nABOUT TICKETS: Tickets to attend the program are by donation; amounts as low as $1 will secure you a spot in the class. Donations benefit Columbus KTC’s Operations Fund\, which helps support our center and its activities.  \nIF YOU DO NOT HAVE financial means\, or have difficulty registering online\, please write lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will register you at no cost.  \nThe Program will be offered in-person at KTC and on Zoom. \nZOOM STUDENTS MUST HAVE an internet connection\, email capability\, and download the Zoom application in order to attend. Zoom software is available here: https://zoom.us \nCan’t attend but want to help KTC’s operations fund?  \nHop over to our KTC donations page at this  link:  https://www.columbusktc.org/product/columbus-ktc-general-operating-fund/ \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Introduction to Vajrayana: A Practice Intensive with Lama Kathy and Lama Tom
DESCRIPTION:This event will be ONLINE ONLY.. \nThe historical Buddha Shakyamuni taught a progressive path to spiritual awakening\, starting with mindfulness and ethical behavior\, followed by the conscious development of love and compassion as spiritual principles\, and the understanding of the limitless nature of mind. \nOver time\, these three distinct phases of his teachings became known as the “Three Yanas” – the Path of Individual Liberation (Hinayana); the Path of Liberation for All Beings (Mahayana); and the Path of the Indestructible Nature (Vajrayana). Each of these “yanas\,” or paths\, led the aspirant further along the path of awakening. \nThis three-week intensive will introduce us to the view and meditation of the Vajrayana\, giving an overview of two particular Vajrayana practices – Mantra Meditation and Mahamudra Meditation – which help the student reveal their inner Buddha Nature. \nWe will meet for three Monday evenings and three Friday evenings on Zoom to learn about Vajrayana  meditation and practice it together. \nPeriods of meditation will be interspersed with advice about how to use the principles of Buddha Nature in everyday life. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE financial means\, or have difficulty registering online\, please to the organizer and we will register you at no cost. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Medicine Buddha Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mantra meditation is one of the easiest and most accessible practices of Tibetan Buddhism. \nVisualizing oneself as a Buddha or bodhisattva while reciting a mantra and making aspirations for the benefit of beings is a powerful way to connect to our own inner goodness and send love\, compassion and wisdom to other beings. \nSince many mantra meditation texts (called “sadhana” texts) are recited in Tibetan\, they can be a little difficult to approach. But KTC wants to help everyone feel comfortable and welcome to attend our weekly sadhana practices\, so we are offering regular Sadhana workshops to acquaint people with the practices. \nThis particular session will cover the Medicine Buddha healing mantra practice. It will be led by Chaplain Cathy Lhamo Jackson. \nPractitioners of all experience levels are welcome to attend. There are no special prerequisites for this class. Students will receive links to download a PDF of the Medicine Buddha chant practice and a PDF of a teaching outline for the class.  \nABOUT TICKETS: We offer tickets on a donation basis to benefit the Columbus KTC Operations Fund. You can donate any amount you wish – even as little as $1. It is all appreciated! \nIF YOU DO NOT HAVE financial means\, or have difficulty registering online\, please write lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will register you at no cost.  \nStudents must have an internet connection\, email capability\, and download the Zoom application in order to attend. Zoom software is available here: https://zoom.us \nCan’t attend but want to help KTC’s operations fund?  \nHop over to our KTC donations page at this link:   \nhttps://www.columbusktc.org/donate/ \n  \nLink to download the Medicine Buddha sadhana: \nhttps://columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Menla-KTD-Book.Medicine.Buddha.pdf \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:MindfulNEXT: The “Why of Worry! - And How to Fix It” A COSI Science Festival Event
DESCRIPTION:The Mindfulness field is continually evolving with new research and types of practices being studied. \nMindfulNEXT will examine the latest research in the field\, taking attendees through both the science and techniques\, while also discussing what the findings from these latest studies might mean for one’s personal practice and/or the field at large. \nThis year\, our topic is Worry! \nTrouble concentrating? Forgetting whether you ate lunch? Each year with our MindfulNext topic\, we examine the latest research in the field\, taking attendees through both the science and techniques\, while also discussing what the findings from the latest studies might mean for one’s personal life. \n\nThis year we will discuss new findings about “worry” and research related to mindfulness’ effects on worry and anxiety\, including the brain mechanisms of these processes.  \nFind out how the brain has two distinct systems – one for fear of a present danger and one for assessing (and worrying about!) a potential threat.  \nThe latter\, worry\, sets up a threat simulation system that hijacks the brain’s attention and working memory systems\, often to the exclusion of other needed tasks. Research has shown that these processes are all about the self\, which meditation practice knows a thing or two about. \n\nWe’re sure to have an interesting discussion as well as guided versions of practical exercises that can center your mental stability and help free up your brain for creative approaches to life’s troubles (worry is expensive to the brain\, mindfulness meditation reduces brain drain). \nTICKETS for this COSI Science Festival event will be available starting Monday March 18 through 12 Midnight on Wednesday  May 1. \n  \nTICKETS: Free!  \nABOUT DR. JULIE: Dr. Julie Brefczynski-Lewis is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at West Virginia University. She received her PhD in Cell Biology\, Neurobiology\, and Anatomy from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Brefczynski-Lewis has been practicing mindfulness for more than 20 years and researching its effects for the past decade.  \nABOUT LAMA KATHY: A student of buddhism since meeting Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche in 1977\, Lama Kathy participated in the first 3-Year Retreat conducted by Khenpo Rinpoche in the United States. Since graduating from retreat in 1996\, Lama Kathy has served as the Resident Teacher of the Columbus KTC. \nRegister here
