SUMMARY:The Manjushri Prayer and Sadhana for Wisdom Part 2 with Lama Kathy
DESCRIPTION:IN-PERSON and ON ZOOM! \nWe all want and need wisdom in our lives. It is said that when the Buddha attained his spiritual awakening\, he realized what are called the Two Wisdoms – the Wisdom that Knows How Things Appear\, and the Wisdom that Knows How Things Really Are. \nBut how do we as beginning students of the Buddha approach these two wisdoms? How do we know what to study\, and how to study? \nUsing a teaching by KTC Founder Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche as a guide\, Lama Kathy Wesley will continue her instructions on a prayer and mantra practice of Manjushri Bodhisattva\, said to be the embodiment of the Buddha’s wisdom. \nThese prayers are said to produce good conditions (both inner and outer) for the study of dharma and the development of wisdom. \nThe first Manjushri workshop in November covered the text and chanting; this second session will cover visualizations and mantra recitation for the prayer and practice. \nMissed Part 1? No problem! You can check it out on KTC’s YouTube Channel: \nThe workshops are being held to introduce these prayers\, which are now recited at 10 AM Every Fourth Sunday at KTC. \nABOUT TICKETS: Both In-Person and Zoom participation is by donation. All donations benefit Columbus KTC’s Operations Fund. You can donate as little as $1\, or any amount you wish – it is all appreciated! \nIF YOU DO NOT HAVE financial means\, or have difficulty registering online\, please write lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will register you at no cost. \nWANT TO READ AHEAD? \nWe will send all participants a link to our new Manjushri Prayer Book. \nCAN’T ATTEND\, but want to help KTC’s Operations Fund? \nHop over to our KTC donations page at this link: https://columbusktc.kindful.com \nABOUT LAMA KATHY: A student of buddhism since meeting Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche in 1977\, Lama Kathy participated in the first 3-Year Retreat conducted by Khenpo Rinpoche in the United States. Since graduating from retreat in 1996\, Lama Kathy has served as the Resident Teacher of the Columbus KTC. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Lha Bap Du Chen Festival of Aspirations and Stupa Offering Puja
DESCRIPTION:In observance of the Great Occasion (Du Chen) of the Buddha’s Descent from Heaven (Lhabab) where he taught Abhidharma to his mother (and other gods) to repay her kindness\, KTC presents a morning prayer session you can attend before going to work\, and a Stupa Offering Puja that folks can attend on their lunch break. \nIt is said that the positive effects of dharma practice on the Great Occasions are multiplied many hundreds of times\, so this is an ideal time to be with your Dharma family for practice. \nTo take advantage of the blessings of this day\, KTC will offer a session of Aspirational Prayers beginning at 10 AM.  \nThe one-hour program will include a prayer of offering and praise to the Buddha\, as well as one of the five main “monlams” (aspiration prayers) recited in the Kagyu tradition. \nSaying these prayers helps us accumulate a mind of virtue\, which in turn helps us see the power of love and wisdom in our lives and sets our spiritual course – both now\, and in the future. \nHere’s a rundown of the prayers we will be reciting: \n\nThe Tashi Prayer (usually recited before the Chenrezig practice at KTC) can be downloaded at this link: https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/8-Auspicious-Tashi-prayer-1.pdf\nRefuge and Dedications: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1l8qrfwy71xexhf/refuge%20and%20dedications%20.pdf?dl=0\nThe Lama Rinpochema Prayer (usually recited in place of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoché’s longevity supplication): https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Lama-Rinpochema.Both-translations.pdf\nPraise of the Twelve Deeds of the Buddha: https://www.columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Praise-of-the-12-Deeds-of-Buddha.pdf\nThe Aspiration for Mahamudra  Prayer: https://columbusktc.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Chakchen-Monlam.pdf\n\nAt 11 AM\, we will spend an hour making offerings to our KTC Stupa and reciting the Stupa Offering Puja created by our founder\, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. Making offerings to a stupa on the holiday is especially powerful and effective. \nHere’s a copy of the Stupa Offering Puja for downloading: http://www.lamakathy.net/resources/pdf/stupa_practice.pdf \nYou can attend one or both of the practice sessions\, which are free of charge.

SUMMARY:The Buddhist Path to Freedom with Khenpo Sangye Trinley
DESCRIPTION:TEACHINGS AVAILABLE IN-PERSON AND ON ZOOM\nTwenty-six hundred years ago\, the young prince Siddhartha Gautama snuck out of his palace and saw firsthand the truth of the suffering of old age\, sickness\, and death.  \nWhile most of us prefer to distract ourselves from such subjects\, the prince could not shake his awareness of these truths. Unable to ignore them\, he set out on a journey to find the source of humanity’s suffering and a method for ending it. \nHe sought answers for six years before taking a seat beneath the Bodhi tree\, where he found the resolution he was seeking. He spent the next forty-five years of his life teaching others that they too possessed the ability to free themselves from suffering. \nOn Monday evening\, Khenpo Sangye will provide an introduction to the Buddha’s teachings\, explaining how Buddhism differs from other religions and describing the different ways in which the Buddha taught to reach different types of students. \nThen on Tuesday evening\, we will look into one particular lineage of Buddhism – the one we practice here at KTC!  \nKhenpo Sangye will provide a teaching on the Dakpo Kagyu lineage prayer\, a profound text that lays out the origins of our lineage and concisely describes the means of attaining the ultimate realization. \nFinally\, on Wednesday and Thursday evenings\, Khenpo Sangye will teach about Buddha Nature as discussed in the first chapter of Gampopa’s Jewel Ornament of Liberation. This opening chapter of Gampopa’s great work clearly explains how we possess the same potential for awakening as the Buddha\, and how we too can attain enlightenment just like he did. \nPlease join us for any or all of the programs over the course of the week. We would love to share the blessings of these teachings with you! \n***** \nTHE FOUR-SESSION WORKSHOP IS WILL BE HELD IN-PERSON at the Columbus KTC Center\, 645 W. RIch Street\, Columbus\, OH. \nWANT TO PARTICIPATE BY ZOOM? Zoom tickets also are available to attend all workshops for a donation to KTC’s Operations Fund. All three workshop sessions will be Zoom-cast. \nIF YOU LACK FUNDS TO ATTEND\, please send a “message to the organizer” using the message button below and request a free ticket. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nLIMITED INCOME? A donation option is available. Write to the organizer at kmwesley@me.com to sign up. \n******** \nABOUT OUR TEACHER \nKhenpo Sangye Trinley has been serving as a resident teacher\, vajra master\, and translator at our home monastery Karma Triyana Dharmachakra since 2018. Originally from Nepal\, he received his novice monk vows at the age of 11 in 1980 and became a fully ordained Bhikshu in 1992. \nDuring this time\, he completed many years of Buddhist studies under great masters including H.H. the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa\, H.E. the 12th Chamgon Tai Situ Rinpoche\, and the previous Kyabje Dilyak Dazang Rinpoche. \nSince 1990\, he has extensively traveled throughout Southeast Asia\, North America\, and Europe at the invitations of Buddhist centers and organizations. \nIn 2001\, Khenpo Sangye completed the traditional three-year retreat at Palpung Sherabling retreat center under the guidance of Kyabje Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. After that time\, he served the lineage in a variety of posts in Asia and the United States before being sent to KTD in 2018 by His Holiness Gyalwang Karmapa. \nKhenpo Sangye is well known for his joy in practicing and sharing the dharma and for his great sense of humor. \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Sharing the Blessings of Milarepa’s Life: A Reading Transmission Event
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM AVAILABLE IN-PERSON AND ON ZOOM\nWhen we hear about Buddhist masters of the past\, their amazing stories of dedication\, devotion\, and accomplishment can be stirring and inspiring. Still\, we might wonder: how can we who study dharma today possibly connect to their lives and examples? \nThe Tibetan tradition provides a bridge for these blessings to come to us from ages past – the tradition of Reading Transmission. \nAs a lama reads the text in its original form in a quick and fluid fashion\, students meditate that the words melt into their hearts\, purifying negativity\, building positive qualities\, and uplifting their capacity to manifest wisdom and compassion.  \nThe sound itself can be an object of meditation\, inviting listeners to dwell in the practice of Shamatha and Vipassana. \nReading Transmissions also are thought to bring blessing to the places they are given\, steeping them in wisdom written on the pages. \nColumbus Karma Thegsum Chöling is honored to be hosting its very first long-form Reading Transmission Aug. 29-31 with Lama Karma Drodhul\, nephew of KTC founder Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche\, reading “The Life of Milarepa\,” an inspiring story of devotion\, compassion\, wisdom and redemption by the Tsangnyön Heruka. \nMilarepa is universally revered in Tibet as a great yogi who overcame immense evil and obstacles and gained Buddhahood in a single lifetime. \nMany of his songs are teachings in themselves\, some of them pointing out the futility of worldly life\, some pointing out the nature of mind itself.  \nThe transmission will be given in five sessions: four two-hour sessions beginning Friday evening Aug. 29\, and continuing Saturday and Sunday Aug. 30 and 31\, and one one-hour session given after the Sunday Morning Dharma Talk on Sunday Aug. 31. \nIntermixed with the reading\, Lama Karma will give short talks and instructions to help participants connect to the blessings of Milarepa and his story. \n***** \nALL SESSIONS ARE IN-PERSON at the Columbus KTC Center\, 645 W. RIch Street\, Columbus\, OH. Ideally participants will attend all sessions\, but Lama Karma said there is blessing in attending even just one session. \nZOOM ATTENDANCE will be by application only. Lama Karma has asked that participants must have received the vow of Buddhist Refuge\, and must attend all online sessions.  \nNo audio or video recording is permitted. \nATTENDANCE IS BY DONATION. If you lack funds to attend\, please send a message to kmwesley@me.com and request a free ticket. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nNEED THE REFUGE VOW TO ATTEND? Contact kmwesley@me.com to be on the list for the Refuge Ceremony at 6 PM Friday Aug. 29. \nWe hope you can join us for this special blessing. \n******** \nABOUT LAMA KARMA:\nLama Karma is a Tibetan Buddhist teacher and past president of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery in Woodstock\, NY. He also is the nephew of KTD’s first Abbot\, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche\, and assisted Khenpo Rinpoche at KTD. As a youth\, Lama Karma excelled in all aspects of dharma study at Thrangu Monastery and Thrangu Rinpoche sent him to the United States. to deepen his understanding of the dharma under the tutelage of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. \nIn March 2004\, Lama Karma completed his first\, and in February 2008 his second\, traditional three-year\, three-month retreat under Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche at Karme Ling Retreat Center. He has traveled to centers throughout North and South America to teach for the past 10 years. He is the author of Amrita of Eloquence: A Biography of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche and Siddhas of Ga: Remembered by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. He was appointed as the president of KTD by H.H Karmapa in September of 2018 and completed his term in September 2021. \nRegister here
