It’s long been a custom of Columbus KTC to observe the Sunday following one of the Four Great Occasions – the four Buddhist holidays that observe events in the life of the Buddha – as time for prayers to the Buddha, his Dharma, and the Sangha.
During the first 15 minutes of the Sunday Dharma Talk on Sunday June 19, one of the KTC lamas will lead a recitation of prayers honoring Shakyamuni Buddha and prayers of pure aspirations, so we might have the blessing of the energy of the Buddha’s special day to make positive changes in our lives. Saka Dawa is the holiest day in the Buddhist calendar, as it commemorates two pivotal events in the lift of the Buddha – his enlightenment, and his passing away into parinirvana. As such, it is said that the effects of virtuous actions done on this day are multiplied millions of times. Our 15-minute program will include a prayer of offering and praise to the Buddha, as well as one of the five main “monlams” (aspiration prayers) recited in the Kagyu tradition. Saying these prayers helps us accumulate a mind of virtue, which in turn helps us see the power of love and wisdom in our lives and sets our spiritual course – both now, and in the future.
