“Speaking Peace Practice” with Teresa Speakman

WELCOME TO OUR FIRST SANGHA-WIDE BOOK CLUB!

It will consist of two parts:

1. Five Sunday Evening Book Discussions on ZOOM

2. An IN-PERSON Saturday Workshop June 24 from 10 AM to 1 PM in the shrine room at Columbus KTC

ABOUT THE BOOK CLUB:

We spend so much of our lives talking to each other, but how much are we simply running on automatic—relying on old habits and hoping for the best? Are we able to truly hear others and speak our mind in a clear and kind way, without needing to get defensive or go on the attack?

In this groundbreaking synthesis of mindfulness, somatics, and Nonviolent Communication, Oren Jay Sofer offers simple yet powerful practices to develop healthy, effective, and satisfying ways of communicating.

Please grab your favorite beverage and join us for Sunday evening book club cafés where we will discuss our thoughts, questions, and reactions to Say What You Mean.

On the evening of Sunday, June 4, Teresa Speakman of Full Circle Peace will offer an Empathy Café.

In 2012, Teresa founded Full Circle Peace (https://www.fullcirclepeace.org/), an organization committed to building conscious communities.

Teresa earned her master’s degree in organizational communication from Ohio University with a special focus on Compassionate Communication in the workplace.

She offers a number of events for bringing about personal healing, growth, and positive social change, including Empathy Cafés.

The Empathy Café offers an experiential learning opportunity focusing on one of the main components of compassionate communication and emotional intelligence.

Then on the morning of Saturday, June 24, Teresa will share her expertise with us again both in-person and on Zoom as she offers a “Speaking Peace Practice Session” where we will practice applying methods to support what we have learned about in the book.

If you don’t have time to attend both the Book Club and the “Speaking Peace” workshop, it’s OK – the “Speaking Peace” Workshop will be open to everyone, even those who don’t attend the Book Club. Watch this space for a link to register for the workshop, which will have a separate registration link.

Here we will learn to listen more effectively, stay connected to our values, and find greater intimacy.

All are welcome to attend one or more of the events.

PLEASE NOTE: There are FIVE SESSIONS in the Book Club, and Eventbrite requires a separate registration (“ticket”) for each of them. If you have trouble registering for sessions beyond Session I, please contact the organizer at lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will sign you up.

You can attend all of the sessions, or just a few; we will try to record all the sessions for later watching on YouTube.

Donations would be appreciated and will help the Columbus KTC Operations Fund. We are blessed to have our new building, and need to raise money to make our monthly expenses. To that end, all proceeds over cost of the program will be put toward our monthly operating costs. You can give $1 per session, $5, $10 – or any amount you choose.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE FINANCIAL MEANS, and want to participate, contact Lama Kathy at lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will sign you up for all sessions at no cost.

We hope you will join us for this special sangha-wide event. May all beings benefit!
