Chöd Workshop with Lama Tsultrim Gyaltsen

April 24, 2021 @ 10:30 am - 3:00 pm

The offering practice of Chöd is associated with the great Tibetan female master Machik Labdrön. It is based on the fearless vision of The Heart Sutra, which proclaims the basis for all experience as being the empty and luminous mind.

Through visualization and chanting, the Chöd practitioner symbolically surrenders grasping after an illusory “self,” and makes an offering of all they have and own to benefit all beings in the universe. The practice is often done to pacify mental and physical afflictions and bring harmony to one’s environment.

In the morning session, from 10:30am – noon, Lama Tsultim will teach a Chöd commentary by the 8th Karmapa, Mikyo Dorje. In the afternoon, from 1:30 – 3:00pm, he will teach the short Chöd practice called Milam Lungten, and its accompanying visualizations.

This unique instruction confers great inspiration and blessing, but it comes with a number of restrictions. Please read the following carefully.

Ideally, participants should have some experience with Mahayana Mind Training practice, such as the practice of Compassion Meditation (“Tong-len”) as well as having some experience with Vajrayana practice, such as Chenrezik mantra practice.

***IT IS REQUIRED that participants have taken the Buddhist Vow of Refuge and received the reading transmission for the Milam Lungten text in order to attend Lama Tsultrim’s teaching.***

The reading transmission for the Milam Lungten Chöd will be offered to registered participants in small groups, outdoors, fully-masked, and safely-distanced in Columbus on Saturday April 17 from 1:30 – 2pm, with a rain date of 1:30 – 2 pm on the following day – Sunday April 18. Details will be sent to participants via email in early April.

If you cannot attend at the scheduled time, please contact Lama Adam at lamaadam@columbusktc.org to arrange an alternate time.

Individual texts are included in the cost of the retreat and will be given to you at the reading transmission.

Only those who have received the reading transmission will receive the Zoom link for Lama Tsultrim’s April 24 workshop, and only those registered for the workshop may attend the transmission.

Registration for this event will close Saturday, April 10th.  You must register before then. Space is limited, register early.

ABOUT TRADITIONAL CHÖD INSTRUMENTS: Traditionally, Chöd practitioners accompany their chanting practice with several musical instruments: a bell, a Chöd drum, and a kangling (horn).

However, the instruments can be a costly investment, and many of us do not have a housing situation that allows us to play instruments.

So, the good news is: These instruments will NOT be required to take this class.

For those who will be using instruments, Lama Adam will provide an instructional video on playing the musical instruments in early April, and will arrange Zoom tutoring as needed before and after the workshop.

About Lama Tsultrim Gyaltsen: Lama Tsultrim Gyaltsen took refuge with Ven. Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche in 1984 at the Ann Arbor KTC, where he was a member for eight years. He entered the three-year retreat at Karme Ling in 1992, and has been in residence at Karme Ling since then. He received getsul ordination in 1994 from H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche, and gelong ordination in 2008 from Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. He is currently a retreat master in the men’s retreat at Karme Ling.
