Hearing Sacred Words: A Reading Transmission Event with Lama Kathy

July 9, 2021 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Reading Transmission (“lung” in Tibetan) is one of three “Permission Blessings” in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

Along with Empowerment (wong) and Practical Instruction (tri), Reading Transmission “opens” the text, sutra, commentary, or specific mantra text to the student’s mind and confers a blessing to the student so she or he can practice it with confidence.

Lama Kathy will give the Reading Transmission for several prayers and practices commonly done at Columbus KTC:

  1. The Tashi Prayer (Prayer of the Eight Noble Auspicious Ones)
  2. Chenrezig/Amitabha Practice, with all the longevity supplications
  3. The “Lama Rinpochema” Prayer (recited for Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche)
  4. Green Tara Sadhana (including the Guru Rinpoche prayers at the beginning)
  5. The Medicine Buddha Practice

You will find copies of these texts on the Columbus KTC’s Dharma Downloads Page

PRE-REQUISITES:  The Buddhist Vow of Refuge is required for those who attend.

LOCATION:The event will be outdoors at Scioto Audubon Park in downtown Columbus. Click here for details: Address of the park is: 400 W. Whittier St. Meet in the parking lot NORTH of the Climbing Wall Parking area at the end of the park road.

ATTENDANCE IS BY DONATION: This program is by donation; all funds will go to the KTC Rebuilding Fund. However, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Those who would like a free registration are invited to write to Lama Kathy at lamakathy@columbusktc.org and she will register you at no cost.

WHAT TO BRING: Lawn chair, sunscreen and umbrella for sun protection, water, and anything else you need for comfort on a hot summer day.

It is also customary to bring a small monetary donation in an envelope. If that is not possible, no worries; white offering scarves will be on hand to borrow for the traditional Tibetan Buddhist White Offering Scarf blessing at the end.

ALSO: There is no need to bring the texts – participants will be listening, instead of reading 🙂

COVID PRECAUTIONS: Although this is an outdoor event, out of respect for Lama Kathy’s age and health, we ask everyone to practice social distancing. All are welcome to wear masks, but unvaccinated people are especially requested to wear masks. If you are feeling unwell, please do not attend. Your donation will be refunded. The next Reading Transmission event will take place in September.

WHY IS THIS A DAYTIME EVENT?  We understand that this daytime event might be inconvenient for dharma friends to attend, but the person who initially requested the transmissions is driving a long distance and is only available during daytime hours due to family commitments. Rather than make this a private event, we are opening the transmission up to everyone who can attend to increase the merit and virtue. We hope it will benefit many beings.

IN CASE OF RAIN: We will meet in the shelter house closest to the park entrance.
